International Game Technology began life as a private company named A-1 Distributing Company in 1971. The success of its video poker machine pushed the company to go public 10 years later, and in 1984, the developer acquired Electronic Data Technologies, making the company one of the first to use computerised player tracking.
It would be in 1992 that IGT would build its name up across the seas with the establishment of IGT Europe, and by 1994, new sales and service offices were opened in Argentina and South Africa. The company acquired two organisations in 1998, those being Barcrest Gaming, and Sodak Gaming.
Into the new millennium, IGT continued acquiring various gaming companies, including Silicon Gaming and Anchor Gaming in 2001, Acres Gaming in 2003, and WagerWorks in 2005, which would open them up to the online gaming industry. It wouldn’t be until July of 2014 that IGT itself would be the business being acquired, with Italian gaming equipment company, GTECH paying a total of $6.4 billion for it, with $4.7 billion of that being in cash and $1.7 billion in assumed debt. However, the IGT name would be retained as the two companies merged, with the full company name now being International Game Technology PLC.
